Mastering Performance in the Sporting Shoulder

An advanced CPD course for physiotherapists, sports therapists, and rehabilitation professionals working with athletic shoulder injuries with Dr. Edel Fanning

This evidence-based shoulder rehabilitation course is designed for clinicians looking to enhance their assessment and treatment of shoulder injuries in athletes—from early-stage rehab to full return-to-performance.

Drawing on years of clinical expertise and the latest sports injury research, Mastering Performance in the Sporting Shoulder offers a practical, structured approach to managing complex athletic shoulder conditions. The course explores functional shoulder anatomy with a focus on the rotator cuff, scapular mechanics, and the kinetic chain—providing essential insights for accurate diagnosis and targeted rehabilitation.

Participants will deepen their understanding of:

  • Glenohumeral (GHJ) instability
  • Acromioclavicular (ACJ) joint injuries
  • Rotator cuff-related shoulder pain
  • Long head of biceps (LHB) tendon pathologies

Through a rehab-focused lens, this course equips you with the clinical reasoning skills needed to choose the right exercises at the right stage of recovery. You'll develop and apply phase-specific rehabilitation programs tailored to the unique demands of both recreational and elite-level athletes.

Key topics include:

  • Rehab-based assessment and exercise prescription
  • Progressive loading strategies in sport-specific contexts
  • Return-to-sport criteria and performance testing
  • Psychological readiness and confidence in the shoulder
  • Integrating functional performance metrics into decision-making

🎯 Learning Goals

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the functional anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulder complex, with a specific focus on the role of the rotator cuff, scapula, and kinetic chain in athletic performance and injury.
  2. Identify and differentiate common shoulder pathologies in athletes, including glenohumeral (GHJ) instability, acromioclavicular (ACJ) joint injuries, rotator cuff-related pain, and long head of biceps (LHB) tendinopathies.
  3. Conduct phase-specific assessments to guide rehabilitation planning, integrating movement-based screening, strength evaluation, and sport-specific functional testing.
  4. Develop and implement structured rehabilitation programs tailored to the demands of athletic populations, progressing from acute injury management through to return-to-sport protocols.
  5. Apply clinical reasoning strategies to select appropriate exercises at each stage of rehabilitation, ensuring safe, effective, and evidence-informed progression.
  6. Utilise return-to-sport decision-making tools, including performance testing metrics and psychological readiness indicators, to ensure a holistic approach to recovery and performance reintegration.
  7. Integrate knowledge of load management and progressive loading strategies into treatment planning, especially in the context of high-demand or overhead sports.
  8. Critically appraise current evidence related to shoulder rehabilitation in sport and apply it effectively within clinical practice.

By the end of this advanced CPD training, you'll have the tools and confidence to optimise outcomes in your athletic population—bridging the gap between rehab and performance.
