Webinar Dr. Michel Coppieters: What's new in Neurodynamics?
Neuropathies such as radiculopathy and cubital tunnel syndrome remain challenging to manage. Recent research demonstrates that neuropathies cause not only local changes at the compression site but also neuro-immune alterations within the dorsal root ganglion, spinal cord, and even the brain.
These changes help explain the complexity of clinical presentations, the limited diagnostic accuracy of tests and electrodiagnostic tools, and why some interventions fail. Yet, these same mechanisms form the biological basis for effective physiotherapy interventions such as neurodynamics and aerobic exercise therapy.
In this webinar, Professor Michel Coppieters discusses:
- How our understanding of mechanosensitivity has evolved.
- The role of glial cells and inflammatory mediators in pain persistence.
- The interaction between peripheral and central mechanisms in neuropathic pain.
- How varying pathomechanisms (compression, diabetes, chemotherapy) shape different clinical pictures.
- How physiotherapists can use movement, graded loading, and education to reverse neuro-immune changes.
Participants gain an updated understanding of the science and its clinical implications for diagnosing and managing neuropathies and radiculopathies.
Learning Outcomes
- Analyse the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying neuropathies, including neuro-immune processes at both peripheral and central levels.
- Critically evaluate the clinical relevance and diagnostic limitations of neurodynamic testing compared with electrodiagnostic investigations.
- Integrate recent evidence on glial activation and cytokine responses into clinical reasoning for patients with neuropathic pain.
- Design physiotherapy interventions that restore mechanosensitivity, perfusion, and neuro-immune homeostasis through movement-based approaches.
- Reflect on the heterogeneity of neuropathies and justify individualized treatment strategies based on current scientific literature.
