Webinar Dr. Tron Krosshaug Investigation of ACL injury mechanisms and biomechanical risk factors – what have we learnt after 20 years of research

When Hewett et al published findings from a small prospective cohort study in 2005, it seemed as if the mystery of why ACL injuries occurred was solved. However, later studies failed to replicate these initial findings, thereby occluding what we believed at first, was a clear picture.

In this talk, we will go through data from video analyses of non-contact ACL injuries, which has provided detailed new insight in the mechanism of injury. We will illustrate the injury mechanism using brand new, sophisticated 3D-animations.

Moreover, we will provide a comprehensive overview of the results from our long-term prospective cohort study, investigating risk factors for ACL injury. This includes more than 800 female elite handball and football players in the Norwegian elite series and includes a total of 74 ACL injuries. Hence, this is the only study with a sufficient number of injury cases for making robust risk estimates.

Learning goals

-      mechanisms of non-contact ACL injury (timing and biomechanics)

-      biomechanical risk factors for ACL injury

-      understand the relevance of various movement tasks on ACL injury risk

describe how the current knowledge can be used for injury prediction and prevention
