What is Anatomy in Motion - AiM ?

Anatomy in Motion is a Method unlike any other which uses the Flow Motion Model to determine exactly what movements you are missing or struggling to access, and regardless of your symptoms, will use Corrective Movements to re-educate the body in its movements and allow the body to reorganise itself and take the pressure of the system that is causing pain. We get the body to do the healing through movement. Gary Ward is the founder of Anatomy in Motion.

The Flow Motion Model is a description of the journey of every bone and joint in the body in all three dimensions as we walk through a single footstep. Each of the 7 phases create 7 different whole body postures where all joints are specifically moving to formulate the joint. The absence of just one of these joints not moving well, changes the whole flow of our movement and balance. In integrated closed chain motion we have joints under-moving and joints over-moving to create the balance in the system, but either scenario can be a problem for the body. The Flow Motion Model creates a base for reasoning how these missing motions are contributing to the discomfort or pain, and also creates the opportunity to build effective AiM Exercises to restore the missing motions.

What is Phase 1 – Finding Centre ?

Embark on your Anatomy in Motion journey with “Finding Centre”, a largely experiential course that introduces you to the key concepts and principles that underpin the AiM methodology. Over two immersive days, you’ll explore the intricate relationships between the foot, spine, and the entire body through guided, experiential movement. This phase is designed to let the experience create the learning, enabling you to observe, feel, and understand how your body moves and how each part contributes to overall function and efficiency.

Description

2 days 9-5pm

Day 1 - the foot in motion.

  • To observe and take away key properties of healthy foot movement so as to better understand a foot’s resting posture and dynamic potential.
  • Discuss how the position of the body’s COM will have an impact on your foot pressure.
  • To look for, and feel, the foot’s tripod and understand it’s implication.
  • Acknowledge the movements and directions of specific bones called Keystones.
  • Begin to look at the only two foot shapes that allow for efficient whole body movement.
  • Be clear on what a pronation is and what a pronation is not.
  • Be clear on what a supination is and what a supination is not.
  • Explore the leg positions in motion and pay attention to the two types of leg shape:
  • Pronation leg
  • Supination leg
  • Add wedges to help guide and direct the foot and explore the tripod

Day 2 - The spine and upper body in motion.

  • To observe and take away key properties of healthy spinal movement so as to better understand a person’s overall resting posture and dynamic potential.
  • Explore the basic rules of spinal mechanics that came directly from Gary’s observation of human gait in his Flow Motion Model.
  • Discuss, observe and explore key movements in the structures of the Skull, Ribcage and Pelvis - these structures form the Cogs (or Gears) that help us to determine the movement potential of any spine.
  • Begin to recognise the 8 body shapes of movement and critically assess your ability to access them (check in style).
  • Put the leg shapes and the upper body shapes together.

Pre requisites

This course is suitable for anyone new to the AiM approach to human movement.

These courses are for practitioners that want to improve their own understanding of human movement to help others in their field of work.
