During this lecture Ivo will start with an introduction into the organization of the immune system and its relevance for understanding musculoskeletal pain. Systemic, peripheral and central neuroimmune processes in relation to pain will be discussed.

In the second part insights into how exercise regulates immune processes will be discussed. It will be suggested that exercise exerts immunomodulatory effects such as a downregulation of the immune response. Possible candidates how the immune response is downregulated are increased levels of circulating IL-10, IL-1 receptor antagonist; increasing circulating numbers of IL-10 secreting regulatory T-cells; downregulation of Toll-like receptor expression on monocytes, inhibition of downstream responses such as pro-inflammatory cytokine production and reducing the numbers of pro-inflammatory monocytes in the circulation.

Finally, this knowledge will be used to further understand how exercise immunology might benefit in the prevention of persistent pain and the treatment of acute/ persistent pain.
