What is the Philosophy behind Strength and Conditioning for Rehabilitation?


This course is predicated on two basic principles:


Back To Basics


In the current time- and often resource-pressured clinical environments, the basic and fundamental principles that drive adaptation, and thus recovery are often overlooked in favour of current trends in an attempt to achieve optimal patient outcomes as quickly as possible. Often these trends and techniques lack an evidence-base and, or, lack efficacy across multiple patient groups. Here we redress the basics of rehabilitating muscle strength, power and endurance, an important process given that many ‘gold standard’ randomised controlled trials within rehabilitation employ flawed methodologies.


Harnessing the Evidence Base


Many neuromuscular conditioning strategies that have demonstrated efficacy in enhancing conditioning status within sports and athletic performance-based science offer equivalent opportunities within rehabilitating settings. Yet, many of these simple evidence-based strategies are not routinely deployed in normal clinical practice. Here we critique the scientific literature from a rehabilitation perspective and distill it down to provide a toolbox of additional techniques to use with patient groups. Dr. Claire Minshull has a PhD in Exercise Science and Rehab and has more than 20 years of experience in the field.


Course Objectives

 

This course aims to expand your knowledge on the detailed aspects of strength and neuromuscular function and the key principles that drive adaptation and thus recovery. 

 

You will learn immediately deployable skills and techniques to enhance your clinical rehabilitation practice and the subtle, but important changes that can translate into big gains for your patients.

 

Practical sessions will include programme design and evaluation and assessments.


  • Components of neuromuscular function/dysfunction
  • The emergency response: rapidly harnessing harmful joint forces 
  • Understanding strength
  • Critical evaluation of the contemporary literature
  • Specificity, overload, progression; the principles of resistance training
  • Design of rehabilitation to optimise strength gains
  • Periodisation in rehab
  • Clinical exercise adaptation
  • Dose-response prescriptions for true muscle strengthening, AND muscle power interventions, for patients!


You will:

  • Expand your rehabilitation toolbox of exercise prescription
  • Understand how to manipulate exercise programmes for different conditions and get better, faster results
  • Learn training techniques that can attenuate performance losses even when the limb is immobilised in a cast!
  • Learn the limitations of prescribing 3 sets of 10!
  • Understand why older patients should be performing heavy resistance training and how to do this

This course has been delivered Internationally to a range of professionals, clinicians and students within the fields of Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation (Physiotherapy/Physical Therapy, Sports Therapy), Sports Medicine, Osteopathy, Strength and Conditioning.


This course is relevant to students and practitioners of physiotherapy/physical therapy, strength and conditioning and allied rehabilitation professions, including massage therapy, osteopathy and those involved in exercise prescription. It will also be applicable to physicians with an interest in exercise-based therapy. 


Accreditation Points


This course is accredited for 15 points by Kwaliteitshuis Fysiotherapie (Vakinhoudelijk algemeen & Sportfysiotherapie). Kwaliteitshuis Fysiotherapie is a merger of KNGF KRF-NL and Keurmerk.


Meet your Teacher


Dr. Claire Minshull is one of the most highly respected and research active rehabilitation and conditioning specialists in the UK. She has worked in the field of sports medicine and health for over 20 years as a Senior Lecturer, Researcher, Consultant and as a Practitioner.


She has designed, led and managed major clinical and nonclinical research trials, supervised several PhD students, and has published over 30 research papers in leading peer-reviewed sports medicine journals. She is regularly invited to speak at national and international academic and professional symposia and, serves as expert reviewer for many scientific peer-reviewed journals.


Claire’s research and teaching interests include the influences of exercise, training and rehabilitation on dynamic joint stability, neuromuscular and musculoskeletal performance. Her work also focuses on assessing neuromuscular function optimally and developing specialised rehabilitation protocols for enhancing function and performance. Claire’s area of expertise means that she uniquely spans the gap between the physiology of conditioning and physiotherapeutic rehabilitation.


She founded her company Get Back To Sport to enable the transfer of research findings into enhancing clinical practice, and has developed the teaching portfolio that has an international reach.


Locations


In the Netherlands we will offer the course in Amsterdam and Groningen. Our partner in Amsterdam is the course will take place at BodyTime Gym two steps from the Vondelpark and Overtoom.
