Anatomy Trains Structural Essentials:

Head, Neck and Jaw

---

Course Description

The neck is a remarkable feat of biomechanical engineering, giving a combination of wide range of movement but maintaining a structural strength. It is often seen as the last site of compensation as it corrects for any alteration from below allowing the eyes and ears to orient to the horizon. Patterns can of course work their way in the other direction and particularly from the jaw and its many possible patterns of movement and holding. This course will focus on key areas of the neck and jaw complex to allow you to build successful strategies to ease these potential problem areas alleviating the issues working in both directions and setting the body up for a longer lasting change.

Course Objectives

Focal points, among others, include:

  • The sub-occipital muscles
  • The lamination grooves and deep cervical muscles
  • The muscles at the front of the neck: anterior scalene and longus colli muscles
  • Intraoral work for the hyoid complex, the tongue and the floor of the mouth
  • The jaw muscles, TMJ, the palate & facial muscles

Prerequisites

You must have completed Anatomy Trains in Structure & Function (ATSF) to participate in this course. Keep in mind, once you have completed ATSF, you are eligible to take all 6 Structural Essentials courses. These can be taken in any order, or as one intensive format in our ATSI Part 1 course. The 6 ATSE courses are:

  1. Arches & Legs
  2. Fans of the Hip
  3. Abdomen, Breath and Chest
  4. Tensegrity Spine
  5. Shoulders and Arms
  6. Head, Neck and Jaw

Accreditation

This course is accredited by both Stichting Keurmerk Fysiotherapie and Kwaliteitshuis Fysiotherapie (Vakinhoudelijk algemeen) for 15 points.

Meet your Teacher(s)

This course is will be taught by either Michael Watson or Don Thompson, depending on the date.

Preparation: Recommended Literature

This course is based on the myofascial meridians outlined in the book, "Anatomy Trains: Myofascial Meridians for Manual Therapists and Movement Professionals" by Thomas Myers. We highly recommend reading this book before your course if you have not already.

The fascial release techniques you will learn in this course stem from the book, "Fascial Release for Structural Balance" by James Earls & Thomas Myers.

If you'd like more information about the concept of BodyReading, we recommend "BodyReading: Visual Assessment and the Anatomy Trains," by Thomas Myers.
